9. Lady Veronika, the Overseer

The top of the tower was a circular room lit solely by the light coming through the glass ceiling. A white marble dais stood in the middle of the room. On this dais stood a beautiful woman. She was tall for a woman with wide shoulders and hips. Her scarlet dress accentuated the way her figure cut in slightly at the waist. She had almond shaped eyes the color of topaz. Silky black curls tumbled down her back. Her creamy complexion was marred only by a small rose tattoo on her left collarbone. She stood, bent over a podium on the dais, her perfectly arched eyebrows furrowed and her cherry-red lips pursed in concentration.

“Lady Veronika,” Erik said, bowing deeply. I curtsied, not knowing exactly what to do, but figuring that couldn’t upset her too much.

“And what do we have here?” Her voice was low and rich. She raised an elegant eyebrow.

“I am Erik Kohl and-”

“Erik Kohl! My goodness but it’s been a long time!” Her detached manner slipped away as her pearly teeth flashed in a smile. “Hendrick informed me of my visitors and your reason for being here, but he failed to mention any names. Do come with me. This is much too formal of a location to reacquaint ourselves.” She turned toward one of the four doors in the room, beckoning us to follow. “Hendrick! Do bring me my chariot. Not that awful flashy one, though. Get the cherry one and harness the griffins. And I would like you to drive us.”

Erik and I stepped out onto a balcony that wrapped around the tower. From the bits of conversation I caught, it seemed like Erik knew this powerful woman from a birthday party. It must have been long ago. He didn’t seem like the type for birthday parties anymore. While Erik made small talk with Lady Veronika, I soaked in the beauty of our surroundings. On the opposite side of the castle from where we had entered, an enormous field stretched out. Beyond that I caught a glimpse of misty mountain peaks. I sighed, remembering the mountains that framed the valley that my home was nestled in. I suddenly realized I was homesick. I surprised myself with the thought that came immediately after. I would have to be homesick for a while longer. I was part of this now, whether I liked it or not. I had no more time to dwell on these feelings, though, as a sight unlike any I had ever seen exploded into my view.

The first thing I saw was the massive griffin. It was a fierce looking creature, with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. Its golden feathers stirred in the breeze. It landed gracefully and looked down at us with eyes that were far more noble and intelligent than I had expected. Behind it, a beautiful carriage glided in. The carriage was made of solid cherry wood. Its sides were covered with intricate carvings.
